What are the advanced features available with Custom Search Engine?

You can access more advanced features provided by CSE for added control and customization:

Refinements and LabelsRefinements are labels that you apply to web sites. They appear as a list of links above search results, offering users a way to narrow their search. When a user clicks a refinement label, the sites that you have labeled are given priority in the results. In addition to labeling sites, you can also specify words that are added to users' queries when they click a label, providing even more targeted results. Find out more.
Excluding sitesWhile AdSense allows you to filter ads by URLs, you can also filter URLs from your search results within your CSE account. Find out more.
CollaborationCollaboration is an optional feature for Custom Search Engines which allows other trusted users to contribute to your Custom Search Engine. Contributors can add sites to include or exclude in your search engine and apply search refinements to them. Find out more.

After creating your search engine, you can access these advanced features by following these steps:

1. Sign in to your AdSense account.
2. Select the AdSense Setup tab.
3. Click the Manage Ads link.

Can I show ads on AdSense for search results pages in my own site?

Can I show ads on AdSense for search results pages in my own site?

We ask that you don't place any additional ads on pages with framed search results. However, you're welcome to place an AdSense for search box on the page so your users can continue to search if they haven't found what they're looking for.

What is AdSense for search?

What is AdSense for search?

AdSense for search is a free solution that allows publishers to place a search box on their site and earn revenue from relevant ads on the search results page.

AdSense for search offers you the following:

choosing the content your users search: your site, a collection of sites you choose, or the entire web. You can also prioritize and restrict search to specific sections of sites.
customization of look and feel - you choose the colors, location of the ads, and the option to host the results on your site or have Google host them for you.
monetization of search results pages with targeted ads.
If you're an existing AdSense publisher, you can easily add AdSense for search to your site. If you're new to AdSense, just complete our quick online application.

What does it mean to display search results within my own site?

What does it mean to display search results within my own site?

When you display AdSense for search results within your site, the results of a user search performed in your AdSense for search box will appear within a frame on your own page. This means that rather than users being taken to Google, they will stay on your site, while still having access to the useful information provided through Google web search.

To display search results within a page on your site, review our entry How do I implement AdSense for search results on my own page?

What if I see a 'URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration' message?

What if I see a 'URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration' message?

If you are using the PHP code snippet and you get a 'URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration' error message on your webpage, you need to contact your webmaster or hosting provider to enable allow_url_fopen and allow_url_include in the PHP server configuration.

What reports can I view for AdSense for mobile content?

What reports can I view for AdSense for mobile content?

For your AdSense for mobile content reports, you can view statistics on impressions, clicks, clickthrough rate, eCPM, and total earnings.

How am I paid for mobile ads?

How am I paid for mobile ads?

You'll be paid for ads on your mobile webpages on a cost-per-click basis; that is, when a user clicks an ad on your mobile webpage, you'll receive earnings.

Can I filter ads on my mobile webpage?

Can I filter ads on my mobile webpage?

Yes, you can filter ads on your mobile site using your Competitive Ad Filter just as you would any other ads. Just add the ad's URL to your filter list, making sure to select the product sub-tab for AdSense for mobile content.

What formats do you offer for mobile ads?

What formats do you offer for mobile ads?

We currently offer two text ad formats for mobile ads:

Single, which will display one ad
Double, which will display two ads stacked
We also offer mobile image ads, which will only appear as a single ad rather than showing two ads stacked.

Mobile text ads contain 24-36 characters of text (depending on the language in which the ad is written), followed by a destination URL if advertisers choose to enter one. Advertisers also have the option to allow customers to directly connect to their business phone, in which case a call link will appear next to the destination URL.

You're welcome to place one AdSense for mobile content unit on any webpage that complies with our program policies.

Why don't the colors show up in certain markup languages?

Why don't the colors show up in certain markup languages?

Some mobile markup languages don't allow as much customization of colors. Specifically, the wml or chtml markup languages do not enable you to customize the border or background colors of your ad units. For this reason, even if you design a custom color palette for your ad unit using border and background colors, you still won't see these selections appear in wml or chtml webpages.

How do I add the code to my mobile webpage?

To generate your AdSense for mobile ad code, first follow these steps:

Sign in to your account at www.google.com/adsense.
Select the AdSense Setup tab.
Choose AdSense for mobile content as your product.
Follow the guided wizard to choose the ad type, format, the markup language, colors, and any channels.
From the Server-side scripting language drop-down, choose your scripting language.
Copy the ad code in the Your AdSense code in its entirety.
Paste the code into the source of your mobile webpage in the location where you'd like to appear.
Once you've added the code to your page and saved your changes, relevant ads should appear within 48 hours.

How do I know in which markup language my website is written

How do I know in which markup language my website is written?

If you aren't sure which markup language(s) your website is written in, we suggest contacting your webmaster, or the person who maintains your site. You can also try to identify the markup language by following these steps:

From Internet Explorer:

1. Open a new browser window, and enter your mobile web address.

- If you see a pop-up that asks you to download a file with 'wml' in the title, your site is written in wml.

2. If you can access your site in IE, right-click anywhere on the main page, and select 'View Source' to review the source code.

- If the source code starts with '- If the source code starts with "'
From Firefox:

1. Open a new browser window, and enter your mobile web address.

- If you see a pop-up that says: 'You have chosen to open xxx which is a: ___.wml,' your site is written in wml.

2. If you can access your site in Firefox, right-click anywhere on the main page, and select 'View Page Source' to review the source code.

- If the source code starts with '"- If the source code starts with '
Sometimes, multiple versions of mobile websites are created, each written in a different markup language. Depending on how your mobile website was created, and how many markup languages it's available in, your site might automatically detect the compatible markup language for a user's mobile browser. Sites that detect markup languages will automatically serve the correct version of your site. If different versions of your mobile website exist in multiple markup languages, make sure you select each language your site supports.

Please also keep in mind that if your mobile website exists in several different markup languages, you'll need to generate new AdSense for mobile code for each version of your website.

What are the different markup languages?

What are the different markup languages?

For AdSense for mobile content, you can use one of three markup languages:
  • wml (WAP 1.x.)
  • xhtml (WAP 2.0)
  • chtml (imode, etc.)

If you're not sure which markup language you're using, learn how to find out.

How are mobile ads targeted?

How are mobile ads targeted?

AdSense for mobile ads are precisely matched to the content of your mobile webpage using the same targeting technology as AdSense for content. Our crawlers scan the page to determine its content and then automatically serve ads that are relevant to what your visitors see.
In order for Google to properly target ads to your mobile website, our crawler needs to be able to access your mobile webpages. The phone useragent we use to crawl your site will contain the string "Mediapartners-Google", so please set up your web server to grant access to your mobile content any useragent that contains "Mediapartners-Google".
Please also be aware that Google will not be able crawl your webpages for ads targeting if you are restricting access to your mobile website to a specific set of IP addresses.

AdSense for mobile content program policies

AdSense for mobile content program policies

AdSense for mobile content allows publishers to generate earnings from their mobile webpages using targeted Google ads. Just like AdSense for content, with AdSense for mobile content Google matches ads to the content of your site -- in this case, your mobile website. You'll earn money whenever your mobile website's visitors click on your ads. AdSense for mobile is available in a limited number of locations.
In addition to our standard program policies, publishers wishing to participate in AdSense for mobile content must also comply with the following policies specific to mobile-compliant webpages.
Website Requirements:
Webpages must be mobile-compliant and developed with a server-side scripting language such as PHP; AdSense for mobile ad code will not display ads on standard webpages.
Mobile Webpage Markup Languages:
wml (WAP 1.x.)
xhtml (WAP 2.0)
chtml (imode, etc.)
Ad Placement and Behavior
Only one AdSense for mobile ad unit may be displayed per mobile webpage.
A "double" ad unit can only be placed on the bottom of the page, but may appear above the page's footer (e.g. navigational links, copyright messages, etc.).
Google ads displayed on a publisher's mobile-compliant webpage may not be modified or obscured in any way.
After a user click, display of the advertiser's landing page may not be interrupted or prevented in any way. For instance, publishers may not display their own interstitial pages before taking users to the advertiser's website.
Site accessibility
Our crawler must be able to access your mobile webpages to provide relevant ads. For more information, please see our entry on mobile ad targeting.

What if I don't have a mobile website?

What if I don't have a mobile website?

In order to use AdSense for mobile content, you must have a mobile-compliant webpage; adding AdSense for mobile ad code to a standard webpage will not display ads.
If you don't currently have a mobile website (and chances are, if you're not sure, then you don't have one), you can create one by rewriting your existing website in a mobile markup language, such as XHTML, WML, or CHTML. You'll also need to make sure the layout of your website is properly formatted to display on mobile phones.
In addition, your mobile website will need to be developed using server-side scripting such as PHP or ASP. Many web hosting providers support PHP, and in many cases, you can PHP-enable your webpages simply by changing the file extension from .htm to .php. Thereafter you can paste the PHP code snippet into the section of the page where you want the AdSense for mobile ads to appear.
Keep in mind that Google will not be able to assist you with creating a mobile website. However, you may be able to find resources on the web that could help you create a mobile site. We suggest doing a Google search for terms such as "create mobile website" or "make mobile webpage".
Once you've created a mobile webpage that complies with our program policies, you're welcome to add Google ads to it!

It is not possible to view AdSense for mobile ads from a standard computer; mobile ads will only appear on mobile web pages. If you wish to see your ads, please view your web page from a mobile phone or compatible device.

Why aren't my mobile ads appearing?

Why aren't my mobile ads appearing?

There are a couple of reasons why ads might not be showing on your mobile web page:
Our crawlers haven't had a chance to visit your page and determine its content. The first time that you add the AdSense code to your site, it will typically take up to 48 hours for our crawlers to reach it and provide targeted ads. Until this happens, we can't provide relevant ads and may not display ads at all.
Based on our crawler's assessment of your page, we do not currently have ads available for your content. As AdSense for mobile has launched only recently, there may be limited ad inventory for your content. When no relevant ads are available, no ads will be displayed, not even public service ads as with AdSense for content.
The mobile ad code was not implemented correctly. The code on your mobile web page must be copied and pasted exactly as it appears in the Your AdSense code box.

Why do I see scrambled characters in the mobile ads?

If you're seeing garbled characters, then it's most likely that the encoding of your ads doesn't match the encoding of your page. To fix this, follow these steps:
Sign in to your account at http://www.google.com/adsense.
Select the AdSense Setup tab.
Choose AdSense for mobile as the product.
Follow the steps in the wizard as normal, making sure to explicitly specify the character encoding (e.g. UTF-8, Shift_JIS) you want the ads to be in.
Once the new ad code is generated, copy and paste the code into your mobile webpage.
After you've saved and published your page, you should be able to verify that the ads are now displayed correctly.

AdSense for Mobile Content Set-up Guide

AdSense for Mobile Content Set-up Guide

If you have a mobile website on which you'd like to display Google ads, this guide will walk you step-by-step through the process of implementing ads on your mobile webpage.
To get started, first sign in to your AdSense account and visit the AdSense Setup tab. Then, click the AdSense for Mobile Content link to begin designing ads for your mobile site. Just like standard Google ads, mobile ads can be customized to best match the look and feel of your pages.

Step 1: Choose a format and ad type
Choose whether you want to display text ads, text and image ads, or just image ads. (We recommend both text and image.)
Right now, we offer two ad sizes: Single and Double. You won't need to choose if you're displaying only image ads, since we always show one image ad on its own. Per the AdSense for mobile program policies, a Double ad unit may only be placed at the bottom of your mobile webpage. If you'd like to place the ad at the top, please choose a Single ad unit.

Step 2: Select your markup language
You can choose from wml, xhtml, and chtml markup languages. If you're not sure what markup language is used to code your mobile webpage, you may wish to review the information in our Help Center to help you determine the correct selection.

Step 3: Pick your colors
Now, get creative by selecting colors for your new ad unit. Simply select one of the predefined color palettes we offer, or choose your own options.
Keep in mind that wml or chtml markup languages do not enable you to customize the border or background colors of your ad units. Once you're satisfied with your options, select Continue.

Step 4: Define channels
Channels, our detailed tracking option, work the same for your mobile ad units as they do for standard AdSense for content ad units. Though mobile ad performance will show up in a separate report, it's generally a good idea to use channels to better track your ad units. If you're new to using channels, you can find more information in our channels guide.

Step 5: Identify your scripting language
The final steps to select your server-side scripting language. Any page displaying mobile ads must support PHP, CGI/Perl, JSP, or ASP. From the drop-down menu, select the language that your page supports, and the code will automatically update based on your selection.

Step 6: Copy and paste your mobile ad code
Click anywhere inside the grey box to select the code, then right-click and copy. Paste the code for your ad unit into your webpage, where you'd like your mobile ads to appear, then save and publish your page. You should see relevant ads appear within about 48 hours, once our crawler has had a chance to visit your page and determine its content. Until we have relevant ads to display, we may not display any ads.

How can I advertise on AdSense sites?

How can I advertise on AdSense sites?

If you're interested in advertising on our network of content sites, as well as on Google.com and our search network, please visit the AdWords home page. From the home page, you'll be able to sign up to run highly targeted cost-per-click (CPC) or placement-targeted cost-per-impression (CPM) advertising, regardless of your budget.
You can also read more about AdWords at AdWords Support. Click through to the Getting Started section for information aimed at first-time users of Google AdWords.

Can I filter the ads that are displayed on my site?

Can I filter the ads that are displayed on my site?

Yes. To create and manage a filter list of websites whose ads you'd like to restrict from showing on your site or AdSense for search results pages, simply log in to your account at https://www.google.com/adsense and click the Competitive Ad Filter link below the AdSense Setup tab. You can create separate filter lists for your content pages and for your AdSense for search results pages. Ads for the websites that you add to your competitive ad filter list typically will not run on your pages, but remember that filtering sites may decrease the number of ads that can appear on your pages as well as decrease your potential earnings.
For more details on using your competitive ad filter, please read the Filtering Ads section of this FAQ.
We also combine an editorial team and filtering technology to maximize the quality of the Google ads on Google and publisher sites:
Review: Across the Google network, ads are reviewed using a combination of human and automated processes before they are shown on publishers' sites. The review process takes into account a variety of factors, including the quality of the ad and whether the ad is suitable for all audiences.
Sensitive content filters: At times, certain ads may not be appropriate to run on all pages. For example, Google automatically filters out ads that would be inappropriate on a news page about a catastrophic event.
Please note that Google does not commit that all ads for the websites that you add to your competitive ad filter list or ads containing objectionable content will be prevented from display on your site.

How do I add the AdSense code to my site?

How do I add the AdSense code to my site?

Once you've generated your ad code by visiting the AdSense Setup tab and following the steps to choose an ad type, format, and colors, you'll need to add the code to your webpages. In the final step of the setup, you'll see your code in the Your AdSense Code box. This is the code that you will cut-and-paste directly into your webpages.
Because every HTML editor is different, and because only you know how you like to build your webpages, we can't give exact instructions on copying the ad code into your pages. We can, however, give you a few tips:
Make sure to paste the ad code into your source without making any changes to the code. This is important, as changing the code in any way can cause errors on your page (and is against the AdSense program policies)
Copy the ad code between the body tags of your HTML
If you're using a WYSIWYG editor (such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver) it's a good idea to paste the code into the Code or Source view. Pasting it into the layout view will often result in HTML tags being added to your code, and will result in errors
If your page uses Frames, make sure that the code is pasted into the frame that contains your page's main content. We use this content to target ads
When you're all done, save your webpages and upload them to your server. If you have questions about uploading files to your server, we suggest contacting your web hosting company directly.
Google ads should appear on your pages immediately. Initially, the ads that you see may be Public Service Ads (known as PSAs) and won't be targeted to your page. We have to crawl your page's content before we know what kinds of ads to send your way - this can take up to a few hours, but usually occurs within minutes. Once our crawler has visited your page, you should see ads that are highly targeted to your content.
You might also find helpful HTML hints in the AdSense Help Forum. AdSense publishers share their knowledge and experiences in this forum, where you can feel free to post your own questions and search or browse for answers about ad implementation.

How does Google target ads to my website?

How does Google target ads to my website?

Once you've added the Google ad code to the webpages on which you want to display Google ads, we take care of the rest by automatically delivering relevant Google ads to those content pages. Google ads are targeted in two ways:
Contextual targetingOur technology uses such factors as keyword analysis, word frequency, font size, and the overall link structure of the web, in order to determine what a webpage is about and precisely match Google ads to each page.
Placement targetingWith placement targeting, advertisers choose specific ad placements, or subsections of publisher websites, on which to run their ads. Ads that are placement-targeted may not be precisely relevant to the content of a page, but are hand-picked by advertisers who've determined a match between what your users are interested in and what they have to offer .
Our technology can also determine the primary language of a page. If your content is in a language supported by our program, AdSense will target ads in the appropriate language to your content. In addition, Google ads are geotargeted to your visitor's location.

How can I set up the Onsite Advertiser Sign-up feature?

How can I set up the Onsite Advertiser Sign-up feature?

We're sorry to inform you that the Onsite Advertiser Sign-up feature is no longer available. The 'Advertise on this site' link no longer appears on any of our ad units. If you included direct links to this feature on your site, please consider replacing those links with text links for AdWords referrals. AdWords referrals can help you earn as much as $45 for each new advertiser that signs up via your site. Any existing direct links you've pointed to the Onsite Advertiser Sign-up landing page now redirect to the main AdWords sign-up page where prospective advertisers can buy media and compete in the auction, driving up demand for publishers' content.
As the AdSense product evolves, we occasionally re-evaluate aspects of the product to make sure they're performing well for our publishers and meeting our goals. We found that OASU links were under-performing, and so we've made the decision to focus our efforts on features that will drive the best results for publishers.
